Sacroiliac Joint Problems Physiotherapy



The sacroiliac joint problems (SIJ) is one of the most common causes of pain in the lower back area.

This joint doesn't have much movements/motions and what it primarily does is that it "carries" forces from the upper body to our pelvis, hips and legs.

Some of the main symptoms of sacroiliac joint problems includes:

  • difficulty moving and stiffness in the hips, pelvis and back
  • sensation of burning pain in/down the leg
  • usually tends to occur on one side more than both
  • the pain experienced increased when walking and standing versus sitting (weight bearing causes pain)
  • pain experienced rolling the body to the side
  • sleeping on your side can be painful

Sacroiliac Joint Problems Physiotherapy Treatments

Physiotherapy treatments can include but is not limited to:

  • postural assessment and re-education
  • acupuncture
  • specific exercise and movement therapy
  • joint manipulation and mobilization
  • soft tissue release and management

Our specialist physiotherapists may also prescribe and engage your sacroiliac joint in very specific movement exercise to strengthen the muscles that envelop and support your SIJ and spine. If you're prone to low back pain, they will also teach and guide you on preventative measures to decrease the recurrence and self manage your condition.
