Tendonitis And Tendinitis Hand Physiotherapy Singapore

We often see patients with tendonitis (also known as tendinitis, used interchangeably), with soreness and pain to a specific muscle or joint in their bodies. It is a type of tendinopathy which is often confused with the more commonly diagnosed tendinosis which has similar symptoms but differently treated.

It refers to tendon injuries that involves a relatively more massive-scale injury that usually comes with inflammation. An example is the Achilles tendinitis, which of course, affects the achilles tendon, or the patellar tendonitis (also known as jumper's knee, that affects the patellar tendon).

Common injuries that occurs

Most of our patients complains of injuries in the upper and lower limbs (the extremities) more than the body and hips. Thing is it depends on each individuals how severe and the number of injuries that they have, the type of games or sports they play, how intense or long they play etc. An example is soccer fans and players tend to develop tendonitis in their achilles tendons, rock climbers will develop them in their fingers, wrists and elbows.

How We Diagnose Them

During our physiotherapy assessments and treatments, we watch for a varying range of symptoms - aches, pains, localized stiffness, even to a burning sensation when the tendon(s) are inflammed. Patients often complain of pain that is worsened after a strenuous activity, and the affected joint and tendon usually ends up stiffer the next day as the muscles spasms and tightens up. One thing to note also is that we observed that patients reported stressful moments and situations in their lives which precedes the symptoms.

Physiotherapy Treatment

Most of the treatments that we provide is very conservative. We will complement the medical professionals side of pharmaceutics, who often provide NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) by providing active exercise therapy, gentle clinical massage therapy, edema management, pain management, in between icing therapy and resting.

Patients during the acute stages of inflammation, pain and swelling needs to rest more first, any unnecessary extra movements that is forced will also serve to aggravate the inflammation, causing more pain, and more stiffness. Most of our patients recover within 2-3 days for the initial recovery, and take about 4-6 weeks for a complete recovery.

Some of our patients, though, even after recovering, requests and continues to come back for our clinical massage therapy intermittently to rest their muscles.
