TCM Chinese Medicine for chronic pain
TCM Chinese Medicine for chronic pain
Pain, as defined by the International Association for the Study of Pain, is "an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage, or described by the patient in terms of such damage."
However, pain may not always be a signal of tissue damage or injury. Pain can also come from a functional disturbance in the nervous system.
In the treatment of pain, TCM uses methods such as acupuncture and cupping etc. that have virtually no side effects. This is because these TCM methods work in an entirely different manner. Acupuncture, acupressure and cupping work to stimulate the central nervous system, which in turn releases chemicals into the muscles, spinal cord and brain.
These chemicals either alter the perception of pain or release other chemicals that influence the body's self-regulating systems. These biochemical changes support the body's natural healing abilities, improve circulation, and promote physical and emotional well-being.
When circulation in the tissue improves, muscle relaxation occurs and pain is reduced. In some cases, improved circulation may cause the pain to increase, but this is followed by accelerated repair of the tissue. Proper circulation is important not only for the blood to nourish the tissue, but also for eliminating muscle fatigue and pain-causing substances such as lactic acid.
In 1997, the National Institutes of Health (U.S.) officially recognized acupuncture as an effective treatment for pain. According to the 1997 NIH panel, clinical studies showed that acupuncture therapy is helpful in treating many types of chronic pain, including
- headaches, migraine
- menstrual cramps
- tennis elbow
- myofascial pain
- neck pain
- low back pain
- knee pain
- carpal tunnel syndrome
How is TCM Chinese Medicine for chronic pain done
If you have done diagnostic tests and imagings at a Western clinic, please bring the imagings (X rays, MRI etc) and reports for your first TCM consultation. Please do not just bring the reports as the TCM physician will need to look at the imagings for complete and thorough assessment.
Depending on different individual conditions, treatment may comprise of different TCM techniques such as acupuncture, acupressure, cupping, blood letting, castor oil therapy, auricular therapy etc. Each session can be 60 min or 1 and a half hours long.
A complete course of treatment is 6 to 8 sessions, 1 to 2 sessions a week. More frequent treatments are recommended initially (eg 2-3 sessions a week) to promote faster recovery. However, the measure of improvement also depends on the individual. Factors such as diet, exercise and lifestyle also contribute to the effectiveness of the treatments.
Hence it is also recommended that one observes some important lifestyle changes to promote recovery during treatments:
- Avoid cold drinks and foods as they may hinder circulation of the body and slow down recovery.
- If you are working long hours at the desk or computer, give yourself time in between to move away from work and stretch the area of pain and tension.
