Electrotherapy and Physiotherapy
Sonophoresis Ultrasound simply refers to the exponential acceleration of
absorption of semisolid topical compounds that is rapidly absorbed into the
epidermis, dermin and skin using therapeutic ultrasound. This is a delicate
process that we perform in our physiotherapy clinic, and it can only be
administered by a physiotherapist.
The ultrasound waves causes micro-vibrations within the skin, dermis and
epidermis, as well as provides kinetic energy to the topical agents' molecules;
this combination allows the topical compounds to be transferred quickly and
clinically safely into the skin for medical purposes.
The pharmacist or the medical practitioner will compound the drug/topical
agent by mixing them with a combining agent, which can be either in the form of
gel, creams or ointments, that when, using ultrasound energy, helps to hasten
the transfer of the medical component onto, and into the skin. Drug
transportation is enhanced because of skin cavitation, microstreaming and
heating, will makes the skin more receptive as well as allows the drug
molecules to move faster because of the heightened kinetic energy.
However, sonophoresis is also used without the topical creams or drug
compounds in our physiotherapy clinics, to accelerate soft tissue healing,
decrease inflammation and for pain relief. Utilizing ultrasonic waves to
enhance drug delivery has been deeply researched and tested; not only it can be
used on topical agents on skin, it is also utilized to deliver drugs into
tumors, blood clots, the brain, and other soft tissues.
Both sonophoresis and ultrasound are viable electrotherapy agents to
accelerate soft tissues injuries, such as ligamental injuries, muscle injuries
as well as cartilaginous injuries. In Singapore, the use of sonophoresis and
ultrasound machines are only allowed by the Healthcare Authority of Singapore
by trained physiotherapists and occupational therapists, as the untrained
personnel using this may cause damage to skin and soft tissues at the cellular
In fact, there had been accidents where patients seeking alternative
treatments had been burnt by over-enthusiastic ultrasound therapy, so it’d be
good to be careful in selecting trained physiotherapy and occupational therapy
services. These services are provided within our clinics in Singapore.
