Smoking and Physiotherapy
Smoking and Physiotherapy
The American Lung Association showed that every year, more than 400,000 people die every year from smoking-related diseases. The American Lung Association showed that cigarrette smoking leads to close to 90% of all lung cancer as well as emphysema and even slows down physiotherapy recovery process.
Smoking causes heart diseases, lung cancer, esophageal cancer and chronic lung diseases - so we know that smoking by itself is pretty bad for the body.
More bad news - smoking will also impact your physiotherapy recovery, and damages your bones.
You see, our tendons, muscles, bones, connective tissue - all get their nutrition from nutrients in the blood. When a structure is damaged, such as bone fractures or an injured tendon; the damaged structure requires much more blood flow and nutrients to the injured area to heal the injured structures.
And what smoking does is that smoking increases the level of nicotine in your blood, which contricts your blood vessels. This means that there will be less blood flow, which means that there is less delivery of nutrients and oxygens vital to your healing structures...which leads to delayed healing, up to 50% slower.
Average bone fracture healing takes around 6 - 12 weeks, so for a smoker it can be an average of 9 - 18 weeks. Apply this problem to tendons (tendinitis) and ligament sprains, and you can see how people can get recurring tendon and ligamental injuries.
If you want to heal faster, best to quit smoking
People who are chronic smokers tends to have the list of problems:
- decreased healing to bone, tendon, muscle, ligament injuries
- increased risks of osteoporosis
- increased risks of fractures, such as hip fractures and wrist fractures
- increased risks of blood clots, which means greater risks of deep veined thrombosis, heart attacks and strokes and more
Can these problems of smoking and physiotherapy be reversed?
Studies show that patients who quit smoking before surgery and during physiotherapy rehabilitation has a significant decrease in post-op complications, quicker discharge and recovery.
Studies show that it takes you about 6 - 8 weeks to quit smoking and for the withdrawals to fully cease. Imagine that, just such a short time to quit smoking and have much more stamina, strength and recovery (not to mention the money you will save from not buying any more cigarettes)
If you have difficulties recovering from an injury, or is scheduled to undergo a surgical procedure soon, and if you're currently smoking, it'd be recommended you find a smoking cessation program.
Some of the items to help you quit:
- participate in a daily walk for about 10 minutes
- practice deep breathing for stress management
- speak to your friends and loved ones to support you
We can help you by prescribing customized exercise plans with our sports and conditioning coaches, massage therapy, clinical pilates to tone and strengthen your spine, and even acupuncture to deal with the withdrawals and accelerate recovery.
