Causes, symptoms and physiotherapy treatment
Most of the time, ruptured discs are the result of a gradual, age-related wear and tear of the disc (often called disc degeneration).
You see, as we age, our spinal discs lose some of their water content, making them less flexible and more prone to rupturing, even due to simple tasks. Many causes of disc ruptures often are from people using their back muscles to lift and carry heavy objects instead of using their leg and thigh muscles. Twisting and turning while carrying a lifted object may also cause rupturing of the spinal disc.
Less frequently, a fall or a blow to your back can also cause a herniated disc, which is another cause of back pain. This is called slipped disc.
As our spinal disc becomes less and less elastic, the risks of it rupturing increases. If/when a spinal disc ruptures, a portion of the disc pushes outside its normal boundaries, herniating into the nearby structures (often the nerves) - causing pain, numbness and weakness in your back, leg or arm.
Symptoms of a Ruptured Disc
One can actually have a slipped disc without even realizing it, as slipped discs can sometimes show up on MRI or spinal images of people who have no symptoms of a disc problem.
That being said, some slipped disc can be excruciatingly painful. Most common symptoms include pain, numbness and weakness in back, leg, arm and shoulders. Some people may experience sciatica, which refers to a pain that initially starts in the buttock and slowly "radiates" down the back or the side of their legs.
Treatment for Ruptured Disc
Slipped disc or herniated disc usually gets better when managed conservatively, meaning that surgery for a herniated disc usually isn't necessary.
Treatment of a slipped disc is influenced by several factors - age of the patient, activity/functional level and severity of symptoms experienced.
What you can expect here from our physiotherapists is one-to-one, unrushed and personalized stabilization exercises, which do not directly affects the disc but works safely to stabilize your lumbar spine muscles.
You may also get the following treatment:
This decreases the load experienced by the disc and vertabrae. You see, stronger and well=balanced muscles helps to control the lumbar spine and minimize the risk of injury to your nerves and your disc.
You can expect our physios to not only teach and advise you how to exercise safely but also the types of exercises that are suitable for your lifestyle, age and symptoms.
