Rectus Diastasis Physiotherapy
What is a Rectus Diastasis?
Rectus Diastasis Physiotherapy refers to physiotherapy intervention for this condition called rectus diastasis - it is the sepataion of the rectus abdominis (see picture above), which is also the 6-pack muscle.
Most of the time, this condition happens during pregnancy, even though sometimes it may automatically and spontaneously correct by itself after delivery...but this auto correction does not always happen.
To know if you have this condition, simply lie on your back, and then lift up your head - if the center of your belly protudes, then you likely have it.
Why is it a problem?
Rectus diastasis causes structural weakness to your abdominal wall and your core. You see, your abdominal muscles works closely with your pelvic floor muscles, so the separation of your rectus abdominis muscles will cause your pelvic floor to be less effective and efficient, and may even lead to prolapse and incontinence (read more on pelvic floor physiotherapy here)
How is it measured?
How we measure the severity is by the number of fingers that you can fit into the separation between the muscles when you lie on your back and lift your head.
- 1/2 (half) finger above and below the belly button
- 1 (one) finger at the belly button
The bigger the number of fingers that can fit in, the worse the condition.
Rectus Diastasis Physiotherapy
If more than 4 fingers can be fitted between the abdominal muscles, then we will immediately recommend first an abdominal binder.
Abdominal binders or a wide, non-stretchy scarf tied around your waist can be used, it needs to be supporting from your hip bones to your rib cage, and it needs to be worn 24 hours a day, 7 days a week - all the time.
You can only take the abdominal binder or the scarf off when you do your correction exercise below, or when you take a shower. Yes, you would need to keep it on even as you sleep or move about.
Tedious, yes, but extremely effective.
Rectus Diastasis Physiotherapy
If you suffer from this condition, you will definitely need corrective exercises.
Here's what you need to do: lie on your back with your knees bent. Place a sheet (folded blankets works well too) around your waist, crossed like you are trying a knot and ensure it is pulled snug and firm.
Then, raise ONLY your head, chin towards your chest. Hold for a count of 5, exhaling during the count. Lower your head as you loosen your grip on the sheet or folded blanket (see picture below)
Repeat 10-30 times per session, twice per day.
It should be corrected within 4 weeks.
However, if it doesn't correct withinthis time frame, please see a physiotherapist who specialist in pelvic muscle physiotherapy.
