Help for your pregnancy aches and pains

Pre Natal Massage Questions That Are Frequently Asked

What is prenatal massage?

The benefits of prenatal massage and post natal massage shares many of the goals of regular massage, which includes helping tense muscles to relax, to provide relief to sore spots, help to increase circulation, improve mobility and improve your comfort level. On top of that, it's customized specifically to the needs of pregnant women and their changing bodies. The therapists who are trained in post and pre natal massage adjust their techniques accordingly.

How Do You Lie On The Table?

Most women will find it uncomfortable to lie facing down from the beginning of their pregnancies because their breasts becomes more tender and swollen - the pressure by lying face down increases this discomfort.

Plus, you can't really lie face down on a traditional massage bed or plinth once your belly has started to grow as the baby grows - again, it'd be too uncomfortable.

On top of that, it is not a really good idea to lie flat on your back as well, especially if you're past the middle of your pregnancy (think month 4 or 5), because the weight of your uterus will put too much pressure on the vein that returns blood from your legs to your heart.

In our clinic, we recommend that you lie on your side with pillows, wedges, or a full-length body pillow for support.

Pre Natal Massage Questions That Are Frequently Asked

How Can Pre & Post Natal Massage Help?

Unfortunately, the therapeutic effects and benefits of massage for pregnant women have not been studied much. There's some evidence that massage may help people who suffer from low back pain and possibly those with chronic headaches, but the studies weren't done with pregnant women. In any case, massage may decrease stress and promote relaxation, helping you cope with discomfort even if it doesn't specifically alleviate or prevent it.

Carrying a baby inside you changes your center of gravity and puts a lot of stress on your back, neck, abdominal muscles, and shoulders. Pregnancy also relaxes your ligaments, so that your pelvic joints are less stable, and changes your posture, pulling your pelvis forward. Add to that the extra weight you're carrying and you may find you've got an aching lower back.

A trained prenatal massage therapist knows where a pregnant woman's sore spots are likely to be and may be able to provide some relief. (She'll also know which areas and techniques to avoid.) Still, it's important to communicate with her and tell her where you need attention. Let her know right away if anything during the massage – including your positioning – is causing you any discomfort.

Pre Natal Massage Questions That Are Frequently Asked

How Much Does It Costs?

Currently in our clinic, a 55 minutes session costs the same price as our deep tissue massage session (call or SMS or whatsapp 97402164 to enquire). If you have health insurance, look into your benefits. Some plans cover part of the cost of massage if you have a medical reason, such as back pain, and can get a prescription from your midwife or doctor.

Pre Natal Massage Questions That Are Frequently Asked
Are there any situations in which I shouldn't get a prenatal massage?

There are a few situations in which massage may be risky. For example, you'll need to avoid massage in an area where you have a blood clot or a bone fracture.  You'd also want to avoid massage on any area where you have a skin injury or condition that could be aggravated by rubbing, including burns, open wounds, skin infections, or eczema. Finally, some people may have allergic reactions to oils used by massage therapists.

If you have any questions about whether a massage would be appropriate, ask your healthcare provider. By the way, steer clear of hot tubs, saunas, and treatments such as hot wraps. These can make you overheat, which can cause problems for you and your baby. Be aware that some massage therapists want clearance from your doctor or midwife before treating you, so ask ahead of time.

Pregnant? Congratulations! If you're in the second trimester of your pregnancy (Month 4 onwards), consider enjoying our Pre Natal Massage Singapore Sessions to help ease muscle tension for an easier childbirth =)

Just gave birth not long and feeling fatigued? New mothers are often very tired, as their bodies have undergone tremendous physical stress with a delivery - consider our Post Natal Massage Singapore services.

Or consider buying a bed wedge to help you sleep better at night (visit our bed wedge page from our pre natal massage questions page)
