Physiotherapy and Mental Health

Physiotherapy: Beneficial for Mental Health and Mental Health Conditions

Physiotherapy is an ideal option for an individual who seeks to improve or recover his or her physical health. The care physiotherapists give at their practices to recover and rehabilitate many injuries and chronic pain not only improves the physical well-being of a patient, but it also has been shown to improve a patient’s mental health. Sports injuries and chronic pain can lead to psychological distress, but the recovery method can give a person the power to continue. Physiotherapy can also aid as complementary treatment for mental health disorders, such as schizophrenia.

Sports practice often involves difficult training or exercising, and athletes can develop many types of injuries if the body is positioned in a poor way. Injuries can be unbearable, and sometimes prevent an individual from continuing a sport or activity for an amount of time. The inability to continue playing a sport or participating in an activity can harm one’s well-being. A Sports Science Exchange Roundtable newsletter reveals that athletes with injuries can develop psychological pain characterized by feelings of remoteness and uselessness until they recover. A respectable support structure, including a good physiotherapist, can help lift the spirits of an athlete and fast-track the recovery process.

Mental health can also be affected by chronic pain, such as musculoskeletal disorders. Musculoskeletal disorders are described as any injury, damage or disorder of the joints or other tissues in the limbs or back, according to the Health and Safety Executive. Joints or tissues can become strained, and this can cause severe pain and the inability to move or carry on with a job or a daily routine as easily. Fortunately, there are specialized physiotherapy services that relieve chronic pain, leading to an improved life.

Multiple studies also show that physiotherapy can serve as a complementary treatment for patients with diagnosed mental health disorders. The World Health Organization reports that depression, stress-related conditions and anxiety disorders affect millions of people worldwide. People with mental health conditions, such as schizophrenia, tend to be less physically active than the general population, and are at risk for developing medical conditions and physical conditions that may require therapy. A study published in the Journal of the American Physical Therapy Association shows that physiotherapy, in the form of aerobic exercise, has improved the physical and mental health of people diagnosed with schizophrenia. Physiotherapy and activity can also alleviate other mental health issues, such as anxiety and depression.

A physiotherapy practice that understands the unique mental health and physical needs of each individual is ideal for those who are considering treatment. Injuries and chronic pain are more bearable when undergoing physiotherapy. Additionally, more people seek out alternative medicine due to the prevalence of medical malpractice in traditional healthcare, so physiotherapy as a method of treatment is unique and reasonable for these individuals. A physiotherapist can encourage a patient to develop a positive attitude and this can accelerate improvement.
