Neurological Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation
We are trained in four specialty practice areas of physiotherapy and hand
1) Orthopedic Rehabilitation
2) Neurological Rehabilitation
3) Geriatric Rehabilitation
4) Integumentary Rehabilitation
This page explains about our specialty of neurological rehabilitation.
Neurological rehabilitation, often called "neurorehab" is a
specialized field where we work and rehabilitate individuals who have sustained
a neurological disorder, injury, or disease. These can include Alzheimer's
disease, head and brain injuries, Parkinson's disease, spinal cord injuries,
and the more common stroke (cardiovascular accidents).
Some of the more common impairments associated with neurological conditions
includes vision impairments, balance issues, ambulation difficulties,
impairment to function especially in the performance of activities of daily
living (e.g. going to the toilet, brushing teeth, wearing a shirt etc),
mobility and movement limitations, muscle strength and imbalances, and an
overall loss or decrease in function and independence.
Usually neurological rehabilitation may combine a few approaches to therapy,
from neurodevelopmental therapy (NDT), Bobath technique, and proprioceptive
neurological facilitation (PNF). Each neurological therapists takes on
different approaches to their neurological practices, depending on what they
learnt in school, in their graduate schools, from literature, textbooks and
Neurological injuries often takes a varied length of recovery time,
depending on severity and location of injury. The higher the neurological
injury, the more severe and more time and intervention required. The lower the
level of neurological injury, the seemingly easier and less intervention
required, compared to the higher one. An example is the person with a stroke or
traumatic brain injury, which is a high level neurological injury; compared to
a person who suffered a nerve injury to his or her finger or nerve.
The difference in deficits would be vastly different, and would require
different intensity, frequency and length of time for physiotherapy, hand
therapy and sports massage implications.
