Metatarsal Pain Physiotherapy Singapore
Metatarsal pain, also known as metatarsalgial (sometimes called as "stone bruise" as well), refers to an intense pain in the ball of one's feet (sort of a very sore, cramping aching pain), and is often caused by an imbalance in the foot function.
Causes and Metatarcal Pain Physiotherapy Singapore
It's usually most localized to the first metatarsal head, which is the ball of the foot just behind the large toe. The next most frequent place of metatarsal head pain is located just behind the second metatarsal - either because the first metatarsal bone is too short or the first ray is too mobile, causing excessive pressure being compensated by the second metatarsal head.
Conditions such as diabetes too can lead to this diagnosis to occur and re-occur.
Other causes of Metatarsal Pain Physiotherapy Singapore
Joint arthritis or any degenerative disease
- Conditions such as diabetes, an cause a type of nerve pain in the foot
- Skin calluses or lesions that causes the weight on the foot to be unevenly distributed
- Repetitive or intense pounding actions on the foot, such as jogging, marathons, sprinting etc
- Shoes that don't fit well that puts too or eneven pressure on the feet
Symptoms of Metatarsal Pain
For people who have metatarsialgia, usually the biggest pain and symptom is the pain in the ball of their feet. The most pain occurs when patients engage in any activities where the ball of the feet has to meet the ground - the more hard/intense the stepping, the more painful.
As our feet supports our body in all activities (except swimming, or anything anti-gravity), people who suffer from metatarsalgia will be almost unable to participate normally in any given ordinary activities.
They will have pain getting to toilets, standing to cook, shopping for groceries - anything that requires their ball of foot to be contacting the ground, they'll definitely feel pain.
In some conditions, some patients may also feel pain and discomfort even when wearing shoes or footwear.
Treating Metatarsalgia With Physiotherapy
If this condition is not treated or ignored, it can lead to more serious foot and lower body joint and muscle problems, so it becomes extremely vital to call a physiotherapy who will assess and begin a treatment plan specific to you.
Treating metatarsal pain primarily depends on the cause, but simple actions such as adding metatarsal soft pads to footwear will help to distribute weight and ease the pain.
Ultrasound therapy to accelerate soft tissue healing, gentle and focused deep tissue massage by our physio to provide pain relief, as well as tissue mobilization to glide the soft tissues will help as well; and these are but some of the interventions done by the physio.
