Even though arthritis cannot be cured, that does not mean that all hope is lost. You can still manage the pain and relieve the stiffness without having knee or hip replacement surgery.
Arthritis is typically treated with painkillers and anti-inflammatory medications. However, as with all medications, these come with potential side effects.
Thankfully, there are natural remedies you can use to relieve arthritis pain.
Note: if you are currently on any type of medication, do not discontinue it without your doctors’ permission.
Get more exercise
Just because you have a condition like arthritis does not mean that you cannot exercise. There are some helpful types of exercise you can do.
Regular movement helps prevent stiffness in the joints.
In fact, sitting around and taking it easy will only lead to MORE stiffness. Get out there and take a walk (on a soft surface), or hop in the swimming pool.
Yoga and stretching can be very helpful as well.
That being said, you might want to avoid rigorous cardio, such as running on pavement or doing jumping jacks.
Keep the weight off
The less you weigh, the less pressure you put on your joints – especially your ankles, hips, and knees.
Large arms can aggravate elbow joints as well.
If you are currently overweight, work with your dietician or doctor to come up with a healthy weight loss plan.
Use Aloe Vera
If you are interested in herbal remedies, Aloe Vera has been used in the treatment for arthritis for centuries. It is known to decrease inflammation.
This remedy can be taken orally as a capsule or applied topically. Or you could simply drink Aloe Vera juice or tea every day.
Eat more fatty acids
If you get enough omega-3 fatty acids in your diet, you might experience less soreness and stiffness caused by arthritis.
Of course there are many other health benefits as well.
Omega-3 fatty acids are available as fish oil supplements, as well as in many foods, ranging from salmon fish to raw radish seeds.
Use a cold compress
Cold therapy can really go a long way in numbing joint pain.
When you are experiencing inflammation in your joints, wrap a gel cold pack around the affected area and let it sit for twenty minutes.
You might also want to take an ice bath for a few minutes after a workout. However, don’t overdo the ice therapy.
Once the pain is numbed, stop. It’s recommended to combine it with heat therapy for the best results.
Use heat therapy
Cold helps to numb the pain, and heat helps to relieve the stiffness.
Take a warm bath or shower every morning before going out. Apply a heat pad over the affected areas to help increase flexibility in the joints.
Like cold therapy, however, you need to know when to stop. Too much heat can be a bad thing. You don’t want to risk burning yourself.
A combination of heat and cold therapy, as well as a healthy
diet and maintaining a healthy weight, are all essential for managing
arthritis symptoms.
