Hamstring Injury and Singapore Physiotherapy
A hamstring injury is a very common injury especially in sports, and
is often called as a "pulled hamstring". The word "pulled muscles" comes
from the common description of how the injury happened in the first
place, which is when the hamstring muscle is stretched beyond its limits
and parts of the muscle fibres of the hamstring muscles becomes torn.
Depending on how bad the hamstring injury is, you may see the range of symptoms as below:
- Grade 1
any signs of pains or strains may not be present until the activity is
over. The might be cramping or tightness or pains when the hamstrings
are stretched or contracted>
- Grade 2 with grade 2
hamstring injuries there is immediate pain, which is more severe then the
grade 1 level. It is often confirmed on stretch and contraction of the
- Grade 3 this level of injury is very
serious, often with accompanying burning or stabbing pain, and anyone
with this injury cannot walk without the presence of pain. In this
types, the muscle is completely torn, and you may be able to see a large
bulge or lump of muscle tissues above a depression where the tear is.
matter what grade the injury is, physiotherapy intervention will begin
with the RICE approach: resting, icing, compressing and elevating; this
is to deal with the inflammation, swelling and pain following an injury.
*this is an important process, and it needs to be done
right, and your physiotherapist can advise you on this. Why do this?
This is to decrease the amount of bleeding and internal damage within
the hamstring injury.
After the initial stages have
been spent resting, then we can start more active physiotherapy
intervention, and this should be started as soon as possible.
will also prescribe progressive resistive and stretching exercises that
will help the scar tissues to re-align properly during the healing
process; this helps to increase the muscle function, and increases the
amount of muscle strength of the hamstring muscles. In the initial
stages, our physiotherapists will be the ones that provide the
resistance, but subsequently as your pulled hamstring gets stronger and
stronger, we will upgrade you to start strengthening with exercise and
resistive bands to increase the challenge.
Regular maintenance with deep tissue release and sports massage will improve the performance of the hamstring as well as decrease risks of recurrence of this injury (see more advantages of sports massage here).
