Golfer's Elbow, Physiotherapy and Hand Therapy
Golfer's Elbow (medically termed as medial epicondylitis) main
character is the pain experienced over the inner part of the elbow, that
may sometime travel/radiate down the forearm. Though it is called
Golfer's Elbow, it doesn't only affect golfers - it is commonly
associated with employees and workers, both men and women in the ages
between 30 - 50 years old.
It will start as
swelling, pain and inflammation in the origin of the flexor tendon of
the forearm (inner part of the elbow) and the bone of the arm (the
humerus). What causes it is primarily repetitive stress and strain or
prolonged gripping activities e.g. weight lifting, hammering, pushing
and pulling heavy objects, digging, screw driving and even driving. If
the patient decides to ignore the pain to keep on being active and
productive, in the short run, they can usually tolerate the pain.
However, over time, as the tendon's level of inflammation and damage
increases, the amount of pain experience goes up, and the patient will
suffer moderate to severe amounts of pain, weaknesses and degeneration
of the affected then.
When this happens the Golfer's
Elbow becomes much more severe, persistent and increasingly difficult
to manage. On the contrary, early diagnosis and treatment will allow
this condition to be resolved quickly (but we understand that sometimes,
due to work/life/family commitments, our patient just can't treat it
any earlier), but no matter what stage you come in with, we will provide
you pain relief, improve your joint range of motion, and prescribe you
exercises to help you heal faster.
Usually, there is
tenderness, pain and sensitivity at the inner part of the elbow when it
is palpated or touched. Pain is also present when the elbow is
straightened and when the wrist is extended back. Golfer's Elbow pain is
aggravated by activities that involve gripping, and in moderate to
severe cases, patients may have difficulties opening locks or taking
coins from their pockets.
When it is still in the acute stage, marked by sharp and severe pain and inflammation, we will start you on Cold Therapy to decrease the inflammation, swelling and pain; and Ultrasound therapy to decrease inflammation and accelerate the tendon healing process.
this stage we will also encourage patient to rest the injured Elbow,
but if it is difficult or not possible for the patient to completely
rest the arm, then we will fabricate a Splints and/or Braces
to reduce the stress (and pain) experienced on the painful area, at the
same time allowing the patient to participate in activities and
exercises as much as possible.
Only when the acute
phase is over, we will start more active physiotherapy and/or hand
therapy interventions. Intervention will include electrotherapy, Deep Tissue Massage, range of motion exercises, Exercise and Movement therapy, strengthening acivities as well as soft tissue management and stretching.
