Foot Drop
Physiotherapy, hand therapy and sports massage therapy

Foot drop, oftentimes known as drop foot, is a medical term to explain difficulty lifting the front part of the foot. This condition refers to weakness or paralysis of the muscles involved in lifting the front aspect of the foot. This causes the person to drag the toe of the shoe on the ground or to slap one’s foot on the floor as one walks.

It is not a disease – it’s a byproduct of an underlying neurological, anatomical or muscular problem. You know, often it is a temporary condition, although for some people it is permanent. If you find that you do have some or full dropfoot, you will benefit from having all three physiotherapy, hand therapy and deep tissue release therapy to help you (more information below).

Both young and old people can suffer difficulty with even the most difficult daily tasks because of mobility limitation when one’s peroneal nerve has palsy which causes dropfoot.

What Are The Symptoms

Drop foot makes it difficult to lift the front part of your foot, so if one tries to walk normally, the foot may drag on the floor, or walk in such a way that the foot “slaps” onto the floor.

  • Some patients try to compensate by raising their thigh higher when they walk, like they were trying to help their foot clear the floor. This causes the “slapping” motion with every step they take.
  • Usually affects only one foot. Depending on the cause, sometimes, it’s possible for both feet to be affected.
  • Sometimes, patients with drop foot may also experience numbness on the affected foot and toes.

Treatment – Physiotherapy, Hand therapy and Sports Massage Therapy

Physiotherapy - Regardless if you have temporary or permanent foot drop, physiotherapy will be able to help. Treatment used depends on the cause – if the cause is diagnosed accurately and is successfully treated, foot drop may improve or even disappear entirely. If the underlying cause can’t be treated, dropfoot may be permanent and we will guide you through options available.

Physiotherapy will include exercises that will strengthen your leg muscles as well as build and maintain the range of motion in your knee and ankle, which often improves walking problems associated with foot drop. Stretching exercises are also very important to prevent stiffness to set in your ankle and heel.

Hand therapy – for temporary dropfoot , the hand therapist may prescribe and custom-make an ankle-foot-orthosis (AFO) and ankle/foot brace that can fit into your shoe which can help support your foot in a normal position.

Deep tissue release / sports massage may be helpful to stimulate nerve growth and blood circulation to increase recovery rate. See more advantages of deep tissue release here.

Surgery may be a last resort for patients who will benefit from ankle or foot bones fusion; in some conditions, tendon transfer may also be beneficial, but these detail leave it for the orthopaedic surgeons to advise in their expert capacity.
