Edema and Swelling Physiotherapy Singapore

Edema is our body's natural way of healing an injured part; a part gets injured by trauma, and the body will send its natural repair workers through fluids that accumulate in the localized area. Unfortunately, along with these workers, comes substances that aggravates pain and swelling as well. Usually medical practitioners will prescribe anti-swelling capsules to decrease the accumulation of fluids (too much fluids can increase pressure and damage organs/tissues)

This delays healing and causes pain and increased stiffness, hence it compromises functional results - that's why we provide edema physiotherapy management in our clinic for it. So whilst it's important that we facilitate the healing process, we need to decrease the amount of swelling too.

Some of the techniques and approaches that we use to manage swelling in our physiotherapy clinic:

  1. Rest - after an injury, it's really important to balance between exercising the injured joint and rest. Too little rest, and the injury may not heal well; too much rest and too little exercise will result with a lot of stiffness and decreased range of motion. We will monitor and constantly re-evaluate you and your body's balance to ensure best mobility and functional results in managing the swelling.

  2. Elevation of the injured part in a position higher than usual position (but not too high in case it may cause too little blood supply to the elevated limb) to let gravity help with the removal of the excess fluids in the localized area; you can use simple pillows, but as pillows may be warm or inadequate sized, you may want to consider pillow foam leg elevator

  3. Compression using fingers (as in retrograde massage) or using compression bandage or compression stockings will 'push back' the swelling and preventing recurring.

  4. Icing / cold therapy is used when there is no contraindications to using ice such as open wounds or adverse reaction to cold temperatures. Icing decreases muscles spasms, and encourages the contraction of the affected area. We're well versed with using Chattanooga cold pack products, they're durable =)

  5. Active Motion acts as a pump that accelerates the propulsion rate of fluids entering and leaving the affected area. It also encourages and maintains the active range of motion for the unaffected joints.

If you have edema that has been persistent, try the methods above but be sure to note of any adverse effects. If you're not sure and would like a physiotherapist to do it, do contact your physician for a referral, or you can make an appointment with us.
