Dislocated Shoulder and Physiotherapy Singapore
A dislocated shoulder is a common injury in sports that are higher
impact and more often, contact sports, such as rugby or taekwando.
Dislocations in the shoulder are often very painful in the shoulder, and
treatment in the hospital is often required. For a person who has a
dislocated shoulder, he or she must quickly see a doctor who can
re-locate or re-position the shoulder back into its original position,
as prolonged dislocation can cause damage to the axillary nerve, causing
loss of sensation and/or strength in the injured arm.
the shoulder has been manipulated back into its original location, it
will be immobilized using a sling, for about 2 - 6 weeks; during this
time, the patient will be taught active exercises to maintain the
non-affected joints' range of motion, as well as to prevent them from
Hand therapy and physiotherapy active
intervention is required as early as possible, but we will advise
against any overhead arm movement and/or sports for 6 - 8 weeks, to
ensure the shoulder heals properly. Physiotherapy intervention can begin
once the medical physician removes the sling and allows active therapy.
We will also begin strengthening exercises for the rotator cuff muscles
as soon as we can, as long as they can be done without the presence of
pain - these will also be taught as home exercise using resistive bands
by our physiotherapists.
For a healed shoulder that was previously healed, because of the possibility and amount of damage done to the
structures within and around the shoulder, there is almost always a risk
or re-dislocating the shoulder. What we will do is we will work on
strengthening the ligaments and muscle groups around the shoulder to
increase it strength, to decrease the risk of recurring or further
dislocation of the shoulder. If there is recurrent dislocations, four or
more, it would be deemed to be unstable and our orthopedic surgeons
would recommend stabilization surgery. If necessary, we will make the
referral to a suitable shoulder specialist.
