About 4 in 5 individuals experience low back pain at least once in their lifetime, and of these 4 individuals, about 2-3 of 4 experiences prolonged "chronic" low back pain.

So why is low back pain so common?

And if it's so common, what can you do about it?

Chiropractic Back Pain SingaporeWhy is lower back pain so common?

Our low back has a few key functions.

Firstly, it anchors and supports the entire weight of our upper body. Secondly, our low back helps our body to move and rotate in multiple directions such as bending forward and backwards and sideways, rotating and extending at the waist. Thirdly, it forms an important barrier and guard for our organs in our abdominal cavity as well as our nerves.

One of the main causes of back pain is because of sedentary lfiestyle as well as modified work to be more sitting than active, so it's hardly surprising for us to be sitting in front of computers all day long, or being in meetings all day long, or travelling (more sitting). Worse, this sitting starts in school when we're encourage to sit for long periods of time.

To match it, we often has lack of exercise to balance out the sitting due to our busy-ness and lack of prioritization of exercise.

The symptoms of low back pain includes:

  • Non-specific, aching pain

  • Stiffness

So, what causes low back pain?

Most of the time, low back pain issues are caused by overuse or repetitive stress injury, poor posture or even direct trauma

  • Overuse/repetitive stress: All that we do everyday can cause damage to our bodies, and this damage builds up over time, without us noticing it. Sitting at computer all day, improper lifting of objects, carrying our children or bending over often are common examples. Those who are overweight or are pregnant also places more stress on our lower back
  • Poor posture: Poor posture can lead to low back pain because it puts excess pressure on structures unnecessarily, causing damage and compensation (which causes even more damage)
  • Direct trauma: These can be accidents such as bike/car accidents, sports injuries, or severe falls are some common examples of trauma that cause injury to the low back.

Some of the less common causes of low back pain includes tumors to the spine or nerves and referred pain from a nearby organ.

Can I just take pain medication if I have lower back pain?

Being able to identify pain is a safety mechanism that's built-in to our bodies to help us avoid danger. The issue about using the regular over-the-counter pain killers is that this numbs/masks the issue and yes, though we become functional/effecient, yet we're not treating the main issue.

Over time, the injured structures will likely increase in its damage, and the pain level increases...and it becomes severe need much, much more work and rehabilitation.

So the best way is to address the problem as early as possible and see your local chiropractor who will help you adjust your spine, take the pressure off your nerve and decrease your pain.

Of course, that's my opinion as a clinician, than instead of numbing/masking the pain which tends to lead to long term pain, it's better to get it treated early.

Should I stay away from activity if I have lower back pain?

This is a mixed issue - on one hand, it's painful to move, but again the longer you rest and prevent your back from moving, the more tight and stiff it's gonna be and the longer it's going to take for your body to heal. However, it's still better to keep moving, but at lower intensity and more frequent rests, as you recover.

How is lower back pain treated?

Research demonstrates that chiropractic care is very effective in treating lower back pain the natural way.
