Castor Oil Therapy For Pain

Castor Oil Therapy for Pain

Castor Oil: History and Properties

Pain relief doesn't always have to come from popping a pill or medication. It is also possible with natural herbal oils such as castor oil.

The medical uses of castor oil are many but its role as an all-around pain reliever is central to why the oil is considered one of the most useful natural herbal oils around. Castor oil is extracted from the seeds of the castor oil plant whose Botanical name is Ricinus Communis.

It has been used in folk medicine more than 4000 years ago in Egypt for eye irritations, in India and China for the induction of childbirth and in Rome Greece and Southern Europe as a laxative. In the current times, the oil is still applied therapeutically.

When it comes to treating chronic pain conditions, castor oil best exerts its powerful effects when applied topically, directly to the skin. The healing abilities of castor oil is often attributed to its almost 90 per cent ricinoleic acid component, which brings about anti-inflammatory effects that cure injuries, swellings and other abnormalities in the skin.

Studies Support Castor Oil’s Efficacy as an Antimicrobial, Anti-Inflammatory, and Immunostimulant

While castor oil has been thoroughly investigated for its industrial use, only a minimal amount of research has been directed toward its medicinal benefits. That said, the healing properties of castor oil appear to have survived countless generations of scrutiny.

Below are some notable castor oil therapy for pain studies:

1. An Indian study in 2011 found that castor leaf extract showed better antibacterial activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria than Gentamycin (their standard for comparison)1

2. A 2009 study found that castor oil effectively relieves arthritis symptoms.2

3. A 2000 study of the effects of ricinoleic acid on inflammation revealed that it exerted “capsaicin-like” anti-inflammatory properties.

Conditions Suitable for Castor Oil Therapy

Some of the conditions that work well with castor oil therapy are sciatica, chronic neck and back pain, osteoarthritis, myofascitis, tendonitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, areas of local inflammation, to name a few.

How the therapy is done at Specialist Rehab Group Singapore

The castor oils and flannels which are 100% organic are imported by us from the United States of America for purity and quality.

Before a treatment regime is embarked, a “patch test” will be done to make sure one is not allergic to the oil. The castor oil therapy is administered over a period of time for effective pain management that targets to address not just the symptoms, but the root of the condition. Please consult our therapists for a professional, customized treatment regime tailored for different individuals.

Considerations

Pregnant women and nursing mothers should not use castor oil. In addition, the oil should not be used on broken skin or if you are hyperallergic to natural oils. So do consult our therapists for advice on the suitability of proceeding on with this therapy for your condition.
