Carpel Tunnel, Physiotherapy and Hand Therapy Singapore
Every human being has a carpel tunnel or carpal canal, it is the
passageway on the volar or palmar side of the wrist that connects our
forearm to the middle part of the deep plane of our palm. We have one on
each hand - it consists of bones, connective tissue, and tendons and
one nerve (called the median nerve).
canal is narrow, and when any of the nine long flexor tendons that runs
through it swells up or degenerates, it causes the carpal canal to
narrow, compressing and squeezing the median nerve - resulting in carpal
Contents of this carpal canal
is a total of nine long flexor tendons that goes through this tunnel,
and they are the: flexor digitorum profundus (which has four tendons);
flexor digitorum superficialis (also has four tendons) and the flexor
pollicis longus (one tendon). One single nerve (median nerve) runs
between the flexor digitorum profundus and flexor digitorum
small bones of the wrist, called the carpus, forms an arch on the
dorsal (back) part of the hand, and concaves on the palmar side. The
groove on the palmar side is covered by the flexor retinaculum,
completing the carpel tunnel. The flexor digitorum superficialis and
profundus (total eight tendons) runs through a common sheath called the
ulnar sheath, whereas the single flexor pollicis longus tendon runs
through another sheath, called the radial sheath, a separate sheath.
Above the carpal canal and flexor retinaculum, the ulnar artery and
nerve passes through the canal.
Effect of wrist movements
movements of or in the wrist changes and alters the shape, width, and
movements within the canal. The width narrows a lot when there is
wrist movements. Why this happens is because the carpel bones move in
relation to one another - both flexion and extension movements of the
wrist increases the compression and narrowing of the carpal canal.
