Can Physiotherapy Treat All Spine Problems?
Yes, physiotherapists are well versed with all sorts of spine and spinal problems, from muscles to ligaments to bones to joints to nerves.
In fact, as Urbanrehab is a specialist rehabilitation clinic, we have physiotherapists who are spine specialists, who dedicated their lives and major to the management of spinal problems.
The Misconception Of Physiotherapy and Spine
Interestingly, we often come acress patients who were told or who understood that physiotherapists in Singapore only treats muscles and muscle injuries, so for joint injuries, they need to see a chiropractor.
Which is inaccurate.
The fact of the matter is, qualified, recognized and experienced physiotherapists are highly skilled, trained and experts to diagnose, come up with a rehab program and administer interventions for all types of orthopedic, musculoskeletal and sports injuries that is related to bones, tendons, muscles, ligaments and nerves in the body.
Our spinal physiotherapists, who enjoys treating spinal issues such as back pain, neck pain, upper back muscle tightness, lower back muscle tightness, neck stiffness and more.
Interventions by physiotherapists are much gentler, and a safer approach to the management of back and neck injuries, as compared to chiropractors, who prefer to perform more "manipulation" style treatments.
You see, spinal manipulation is the fundamental of chiropractic treatment...yet this technique is also known and practiced by spinal physiotherapists as well. Yet, we prefer to do more gentler techniques, such as joint mobilization, pain relief modalities and exercise therapy; which has more long-term carryover benefits, and less risks, and higher chances of us discharging you.
If you become reliant on the cracking of the manipulative therapies, where it induces you to be a passive participant, always relying on the therapist - how are you ever going to get discharged to live an independent lifestyle?
Best practice and evidence based physiotherapy has shown that gentler techniques to back care are equally, if not more effective than spinal manipulation - that is why we prefer the gentler, safer option, with better carryover effect.
Many of our patients think that the "popping" in spinal manipulation during their TCM or chiropractic treatments means that their spine is "being pushed back into place" - actually, there is no medical research or evidence to support this belief that joint manipulation puts joints back into place.
Worse is that evidence is showing otherwise - spinal manipulation may lead to osteoarthritis of the spine joints, or even mini-strokes if done incorrectly.
Research has sown that an active participation and management of spine problems leads to best clinical outcomes. Having a customized exercise program on top of the mobilization is even better. Plus, we also want to understand the additional factors contributing to this problem, and find out ways to change or eliminate them, so the long term carryover effect is better.
This word, long term positive carry over effect, is one of the keywords that we as physiotherapists, occupational therapists, Chinese Physicians, massage therapists and personal trainers look at - we want you to be active, independent and free.
When you see a physiotherapist for any pains or discomfort, what we will do is not only just treat the pain, but we will dive deep to find out the real cause of the pain, and treat the problem at the root. We will also provide you with a home self-therapy program so that you can do exercises between sessions, for immediate pain relief and for long term prevention.
We will not try to convince you that you need to come for regular spinal manipulations of more than 50 - 100 sessions over a period of 1 to 2 years or more. We have many patients who visit us after seeing a chiropractor for 2-5 years, and were shocked that their pain can be managed in a much lesser time.
