Bursitis and Physiotherapy Singapore

Bursitis and Physiotherapy

Bursa is found in the hundreds all over our bodies, at places where muscular and tendinous surfaces glide over bones. Their main function is to decrease the amount of resistance and friction between two surfaces; bursitis refers to the inflammation of the bursa, causing its gliding capability to lessen, as well as becoming tender and painful with touch and movement.

What causes it?

It is primarily caused by repetitive movements or because of extended trauma or pressure in the bursa. Sometimes traumatic accidents and injuries e.g. falling on the bursa can cause it to become inflammed, this condition can develop.

What usually happens is when there is a trauma, it causes swelling, and if it happens to the bursa, the swelling inflammes the bursa causing it to glide improperly, resulting in inflammation and tenderness and ending up with inflammation later. In some cases, conditions that affects the system, such as rheumatoid arthritis can also lead to this condition.

What are the symptoms?

In our physiotherapy clinics, we diagnose by the following observations and findings:

  1. The bursa feels tender and painful
  2. Painful with movements associated with the bursa
  3. Noted swelling within and around the bursa

In some cases, the inflammed bursa can become infected, especially where it is often re-injured and not allowed to heal fully. Signs of infection includes swelling and heat around the bursa, possible open wounds near the bursa as well as presence of fever. If you think you have this, please see your physician immediately.

Physiotherapy Treatment

Our physiotherapy intervention begins with the proper way to protect the bursa from further damage and injury, in the way you move the joint. If necessary, we may request for your joint to be splintedto protect the bursa from possible infection, until the inflammation and tenderness diminishes. We may request you see your physician to discuss medication course.

Once we have ensured that the inflammation and acute stage is cleared, we will start more active physiotherapy, which is to intervene by methods of education to prevent re-injury, Exercise and Movement therapy to strengthen weakened muscles as well as using the safer methods of mobilization and activity.

No forms of exercise should start until the inflammation stage has subsided. If the cause of the bursitis is primarily due to conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis or gout, then treatment is slightly more complicated. For these kind of situations, the best approach is more of the time, to avoid the flare-ups that aggravate the situations, to avoid aggravators of bursitis, as well as to keep in shape generally.
