Broken Wrist Physiotherapy Singapore
Broken Wrist Physiotherapy Singapore
Broken wrists is one of the most common wrist injuries, and broken wrist (medically termed as distal radial and/or ulnar fractures) is a very common condition.
Most of the times, injuries to the wrist happen during falls on an outstretched hand. Additional risk factors for a broken wrist increases when one is more active and participates in high impact sports such as basketball, rugby, football and skiing; or bone-related conditions such as osteoporosis, where bone becomes thin and more fragile.
How Our Physiotherapists & Hand Therapists Help You
It's vital to diagnose and treat a broken wrist soonest possible because we have to ensure that the bone heals properly in perfect alignment, on top of reducing stiffness and pain.
Delaying the treatment will likely decrease your ability to use your hand function in daily activities and work, such as writing, cooking, carrying etc - anything that involves your injured wrist.
Our hand therapists have clinical experience and expertise in managing wrist injuries such as broken wrists or sprained wrists. In fact, wrist injuries are the most common conditions that we treat as hand therapists. What we will do is to first assess and diagnose your condition, and form a treatment plan appropriate to the level of rehab you need.
Symptoms of Broken Wrists
Symptoms include a great deal of wrist pain, a “dinner fork”
deformity, wrist swelling ad an inability to use the wrist and hand.If a
fracture of the wrist is suspected, the patient should be taken to an
accident and emergency department without delay. Ice packs may be
helpful to relieve pain.
Our Hand Therapy Treatment For Broken Wrists
Hand therapy begins immediately even though you may be casted in plaster cast - we will start with improving and maintaining the range of motion in your unaffected joints, such as your shoulder, elbow, fingers and thumb of the affected wrist.
Why we do this is to prevent and manage possible stiffness that tends to occur when the wrist is broken (we tend to "guard" our injured wrist by protecting it from use, but whilst that serves to protect the wrist, we compromise movement in our unaffected joints in the same hand).
Assuming there is no complications with healing of the bone, plaster cast can be usually removed within six (6) to eight (8) weeks; following which we can start with more active rehabilitation and hand therapy to the broken wrist.
Our hand therapist may also introduce joint manipulation and mobilization, as well as soft tissue gliding to reduce the stiffness and pain in your wrist. Other additional therapy will include paraffin hot wax therapy, hot pack therapy, and slowly and gradually move towards progressing strengthening to increase the load your wrist can take.
What To Expect From Broken Wrist Physiotherapy
Our physiotherapists and hand therapist will have to assess you and measure your progress and level of need for therapy, and then prescribe a range of exercises which includes therapy putty, hand therapy balls, finger and grip strengtheners, to add strength to the muscles around the wrist.
We will also gear towards resolving wrist swelling and pain, as well as improving your wrist and finger range of motion to 100%.
