Broken Bones Healing Process Physiotherapy Singapore
Broken bones start the fracture healing process almost immediately
after the injured bones and surrounding structures and tissues starts to
bleed, and a hematoma forms. This blood thickens and coagulates to form
a clot between the fragments, and within a few days the blood vessels
will grow into the hematoma (jelly-like matrix of healing clot by now),
bringing phagocytes (cleaning up agents) that slowly removes
not-important/dead tissues away from the area.
the blood vessels brings in fibroblasts into the walls of the vessels
which multiply and produce collagen fibres, that slowly replaces the
matrix of blood clot with that of collagen. The rubbery and elastic
consistency of the collagen fibres immobilizes bone fragments unless
very strong or persistent forces are applied to them.
the fibroblasts lays down bone fibres called bone matrix at the core of
the fractured site, called calcium hydroxyapatite, which are insoluble,
solid crystals. The collagen fibres, when combines with these crystals,
transforms it into bone tissue. Healing fractures is sufficiently
mineralised and strengthened over a period of six weeks (one and a half
months), shorter time is required in children, and likewise, longer time
is required in older people.
However, these initial
and freshly healed bones do not have the strong properties of mature
bones, and are susceptible to fractures again given enough force
application. Healed broken bones, by a process of remodelling, matures
by lamellar bones structuring. The entire process takes up to 18 months,
but the strength of the bone is up by 80% in about 3 months after the
initial fracture injuries.
There are some factors
that can accelerate or decelerate the healing process. Presence of
nicotine slows the healing, good nutrition as well as adequate calcium
intake will help the bone healing process. Weight bearing activities,
when the bone has healed sufficiently to bear the weight, builds bone
