Black Toe Nail Podiatry Singapore

Black Toe Nail Podiatry Singapore

Athletes and people who are active in sports will often encounter the problem of one or more of their toe nails turning black or dark - this syndrome is called "black toe nail" is is caused by your toes bumping or hitting the end/top of your shoe toe area. It can also be caused by wearing tight footwear for a prolonged period of time.

It is also quite common for the black toe nail to gradually become loose and fall off, so don't be worried if that happens. Why is it dark/black in color is because of bruising that occurred under the toe nail.

Usually, it's not supposed to be painful, but sometimes the damage caused to the toe nail mail expose it to possible fungal infection in the nail - these infected kinds tends to be pretty sore and painful.

For individuals who have diabetes, any changes to the color of their toe nails should always be evaluated by doctor. You see, the pressure that causes the bruising can also cause sores under the toe nail, which can become infected/lead to infection later. (Click here if you have Type 2 Diabetes and you're interested in natural diabetes management.)

Black Toe Nail Podiatry Singapore:

Podiatry intervention may consist of trimming the loose black nail back, as well as applying a topical anti-fungal medication to prevent possibility/potential of fungal infection, such as in athlete's foot fungal infection.

If the skin under the nail is ulcerated (means that there is an open or exposed wound, we would then apply a topical antibiotic ointment; again, also to prevent risk of bacterial infection. Patients with diabetes who develop this condition should not self treat and should seek the advice of their diabetes doctor.

Black Toe Nail Podiatry: Prevention

We do encourage patients to wear properly fitting shoes plus regularly stretch out the calf muscles, especially for athletes and people are are active in sports. This is because people who are move active and athletic often have very tight back calf muscles, which naturally pulls the feel "downwards".

This causes the muscles of the front of the calves which function is to pull the foot upwards, to work harder to counteract the back calf muscles - this forces the toes to impact the top of the toe with greater force, potentially causing and leading to the bruising of the nail.
