Ankle Sprain Podiatry
Ankle Sprain Podiatry:
Ankle sprains are very common injuries, and they are usually caused or aggravated by the unnatural twisting or force exertion on the ankle bones of our feet, which then leads to excessive stretching and even tearing (partial or full complete tear) of one or more ligaments on the sides of the ankle.
Usually, it's the ligament on the outside of the ankle, which tends to overstretch and tear. The severity of the sprain (partial, recurrent or full tear) will influence the type and length of treatment required.
If not treated properly and accurately, ankle sprains usually develop into chronic foot and painful conditions cascading from ankle-supported structures.
Ankle Sprain Podiatry - Symptoms
The main symptoms of ankle sprains are:
- pain following a sprain/twist/injury
Ankle Sprain Podiatry - Treatment
Treatment will usually start with reducing inflammation and swelling by doing this three:
- resting your foot and ankle and their internal structures
- elevating the ankle to encourage flowback of swelling
- applying ice to apply vasoconstriction to aid flowback
We may also apply compressive bandages to immobilize and support your injured ankle during the acute healing phase. However, for serious ankle sprains, especially with competitive athletes, these may require surgical intervention to repair plus tighten the damaged ligaments.
To prevent (recurrent) ankle sprains, you'll need to build a triage of strength, balance and flexibility in your foot and ankle through exercises and stretching (taught by physiotherapists), as well as wearing well-fitting shoes that the podiatrist can advise.
