Achilles Tendonitis Podiatry

Achilles Tendonitis Podiatry:

Our Achilles tendon is the largest tendon in our human body, and is made to be able to withstand thousands of pounds of force. At the same time, because it's so frequently used (everyday as we walk, stand, work - all the time, even when we cook and shower), it tends to be the most frequently injured and ruptured tendon.

It is also often injured as a result of a sports or contact injury. It doesn't matter if you're a professional or a weekend warrior - both are equally at risk of developing achilles tendonitis, which is a very common overuse injury and inflammation of the tendon.

What can cause or aggravate Achilles tendonitis?

´╗┐There are several potential causes or aggravators of this injury, which can compound the condition to make it chronic (long term)

  • Individuals who enjoys hill running or stairs climbing.
  • Individuals who have pre-existing overused injury, which is usually caused by stiffer/decreased calf muscle flexibility
  • Individuals who increased their walking, jogging or running distance and speed too rapidly for their achilles tendons to adjust well
  • Individuals who have insufficient warm up, or who has been sedentary and suddenly picking up exercise and sports without adequately stretching and warming up their feet
  • Individuals who had direct trauma caused either by sudden and/or strong calf muscle contraction, such as in bursting into a sprint
  • Improper footwear and/or a tendency toward overpronation.

Achilles Tendonitis Podiatry - Symptoms

Most of our patients who develop achilles tendonitis often starts with the development of mild ache and pain after running or exercise that progressively feels more and more painful.

Other tell-tale signs and symptoms include:

  • Localized pain that seems to keep recurring, from mild to severe in intensity, along the achilles tendon or a few hours after jogging or running
  • In the morning, they may feel tightness and tenderness just above where the achilles tendon attaches to the heel
  • "Heaviness" or "sluggishness" in your leg
  • Swelling that may be mild to severe in nature
  • "Sudden Pain" when you get out from bed and place force/stand on your feet in the tendon and this pain gradually goes away as your tendon warms up with use
  • Stiffness that generally diminishes as the tendon warms up with use.

Treatment normally includes:

  • Tape or bandages specifically designed to restrict motion of the tendon.
  • Taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medication for a period of time. Note: Please consult your doctors before taking any forms of medication.
  • Customized insoles and orthotics, corrective shoe inserts designed to help support the calf muscle and relieve stress on the achilles tendon. Both nonprescription orthoses (such as a heel pads or over-the-counter shoe inserts) and prescribed custom orthotics may be recommended depending on the length and severity of the problem.
  • Individuals to rest from exercises that aggravate the symptoms or
  • Switch to exercises that do not stress the tendon (such as swimming).
  • Stretching and exercises to strengthen the weak muscle group in front of the leg, calf, and the upward foot flexors, as well as massage and ultrasound.

In extreme cases, surgery is performed to remove the fibrous tissue and repair any tears.
