Soft Tissue Injuries Physiotherapy
Soft tissue injuries refer to "non bone/bony injuries", and are injuries to soft tissues such as our muscles, tendons, ligaments, skin and nerve.
Most of the time, the most common soft tissue injuries that we see are usually ligamental sprains and straings, muscle contusions, tendinopathies, bursities and stress-related injuries. These kinds of soft tissues can be common in sports but are also caused by repetitive strain and acute trauma like falls.
I definitely recommend all soft tissue injuries to be treated by our specialist physios like any other injuries: quickly, early, professionally and completely, for you to regain full movement without pain.
Soft Tissue Injuries Physiotherapy Symptoms
Soft tissue injuries are usually groups/categorized based on the timeline from injury as well as the healing stages/processes that happen during the timelines.
- Acute Phase (Protection)
The is the "freshest" part of the injury, where you can see/experience the most pain, blood and swelling. At this point in time, your body's goal is to protect your injury from more damage.
- Sub-Acute (Repair)
The soft tissue injury will "become" sub-acute when the first acute phase decrease in intensity and transition to decreased swelling and pain, and your body focuses from protection to repairing the injury.
- Late Stage (Remodeling)
After six weeks, your soft tissue injury is starting the next phase of maturing but unfortunately when you try to stretch, move, load and stress it, you will find that it's not strong enough
Soft Tissue Injuries Physiotherapy Treatments
Our specialist physiotherapists and hand therapists will be actively involved at every phase of the post-injury recovery and rehabilitation phase, and treatments really depends on the level of severity.
In the early stages, patients are advised to not put much load/weight on the affected area before starting treatments to minimize any additional damages (ie no walking) as if there is additional movements etc, it can cause additional flare up and swelling that will cause more damage/stiffness and delay healing completely.
We tend to use a lot more cold therapy during the acute phase to minimize the swelling before, during and after therapies; and it helps with the pain as well. Where possible, we will apply electrotherapy such as ultrasound therapy to accelerate soft tissue healing.
The biggest problem post soft tissue injuries is truly joint stiffness, and many patients seem to ignore this because it's not as obvious as swelling or blood. Here's the issue: when a soft tissue gets injured, there is a lot of blood, swelling and pain directly caused by the injury, and the body deploys its own repair technician which will try to stabilize the site with a lot of stability-causing "glue".
This glue is great to repair and heal and stabilize structures that are torn, but the problem with this is that it's a general-area glue, so this glue often seeps into joints, between muscles and tendons, making everything "stick together" this is called adhesion, and is a big problem if left untreated...because everything can then "stick together permanently" - causing pain and decreased movement.
Seeing our specialist physiotherapists and hand therapists at every stage of healing is important to provide you and your injury quick, safe and clinically effective solution to move and prevent adhesions yet not further damage the structures.
