Physiotherapy and Rehab for Diabetes management
Diabetes mellitus refers a a condition which medically is known as a metabolic disorder with high sugar (glucose) in the blood or blood stream. What happens is that the body is unable to produce insulin adequately or has poor response to insulin, or both.
Diabetes can cause unnaturally high blood glucose levels (also known as hyperglycemia), blood circulation issues as well as even damaging the nerves.
Unfortunately, diabetes cannot be cured, but it can often be well managed with proper medical care, good diet as well as regular exercise. There are two types of diabetes, Type 1 meaning its inherited genetically and Type 2 are due to lifestyle - 90% of people with diabetes are in the Type 2 categories.
If you are interested in natural diabetes management, visit here.
Basic symptoms include:
- increased urination frequency
- feeling hungry more often
- increased weight gain
- sense of tiredness and fatigue
- feeling thirsty all the time
- cuts and bruises that seem to take longer to heal
- tingling and numbness in hands and feet
Type 1 Diabetes: refers to an autoimmune disease which the body itself attacks and destroys the cells that creates/produces insulin, resulting in decreased insulin in the body.
Type 2 Diabetes: the body is unable to use insulin properly and/or becomes insulin resistant, and this can develop at any stage and is the diagnosis that is most commonly diagnosed during adulthood.
Our main approach here in Specialist Rehab Group is to target 2 core areas: exercise/physical activities and diet, and scientifically, these 2 are the most important lifestyle factors for patients who suffer from diabetes mellitus.
What exercises and physical activities can help with includes:
- help with losing weight or weight loss/maintenance
- helps decrease bad cholesterol (LDL) and increase good cholesterols (HDL)
- helps build and maintain muscle mass
- helps to tone muscles and reduce body fat
- helps to decrease blood pressure
- helps to decrease stress levels experience
- helps reduce the need for insulin injections or medications
- helps reduce risk of cardiovascular/heart disease
We prescribe and recommend patients to participate in regular exercises lasting at least 30 - 60 minutes, 3 to 4 times per week is recommended for patients with diabetes.
Our senior specialist physiotherapists can assess and prescribe a specific gradual exercise program for you to provide you with a structure that will help you kickstart and continue your training/exercise program.
If you are interested in natural diabetes management, visit here.
We have highly skilled and experienced physiotherapists and rehab therapists who will employ a mix of specific exercise programs, mobilizations and manual therapy, massage as well as electrostimulation equipment to treat orthopedic and musculoskeletal conditions that develop secondary to diabetes (meaning that you may develop body, muscle, joint and nerve issues due to diabetes)
After they assess you biomechanically and taking detailed clinical history, they will create a customized treatment plan to address conditions specific to your needs.
Also, diabetic foot care is very important as foot, ankle and leg problems are one of the core/common problems associated with hospitalization due to diabetes. Our physiotherapists work very closely with our podiatrists to ensure that you are getting the best health and rehab care you need.

We are a wholly Singapore Private Limited group of licensed physiotherapists, hand therapists, podiatrists, chiropractors, sports massage therapists, clinical pilates practitioners and TCM physicians practicing in our scope of rehabilitation and its areas of specializations.
As listed in our website are the list of services we provide our clients as referred by their medical doctors or by self referrals/word of mouth, but you can also make an appointment without seeing any doctors (that being said, if you do need a referral to a specialist orthopedic surgeon or sports GP, we will recommend you too as value added service at no additional costs to you).
