Patellar Tendinopathy (Jumper’s Knee) Physiotherapy Singapore
Jumper’s Knee is the common term for Patella Tendinopathy.
Typically, it presents with
knee pain that gradually increases with running, jumping and landing activities over time/repetition , because as the physical load and strain on the Patella Tendon increases and microscopic damage develops in the tissue that makes up
Early recognition by a doctor or Specialist Physiotherapist
is important as the outcome is better if treatment is initiated early.
Patellar Tendinopathy (Jumper’s Knee) Physiotherapy Symptoms
Our knees and patella tendon experiences the highest and greatest amount of stress when we jump and land. Other than patellar tendinopathy being caused/aggravated by sports-related use/overuse, jumper's knee is also linked to ageing.
You see, as we grow older, our cellular regeneration rate decreases over time, and this means that damaged tissues regeneration slows and the quality of the tendon also decreases...which also explains why jumper's knee usually is a gradual condition, and not a sudden/acute condition.
There is presence of pain in the tendon which increases due to weight bearing/loading activities such as walking, running and jumping. It
will usually feel tender to touch just below our knee cap. Also, there usually will be pain and tightness
when bending, squatting, or straightening our knees as well as knee stiffness first thing in the morning is common.
Factors that increase your chance of developing patellar tendinopathy:
- Being physically active
- Increase in training
- Changing sport
- Hard training surface
- Muscle weakness
Patellar Tendinopathy (Jumper’s Knee) Physiotherapy Treatment
As your tendon heals, our highly skilled specialist knee physiotherapists may
gently mobilize the soft tissue by providing gentle controlled stress, that helps the
tendon to adapt and gain tensile strength.
Recovery is optimized
by using a program that utilizes ‘eccentric muscle work’,
which is muscle that is lengthening while
contracting – a contraction that occurs during movements such as landing
Maximal tension is generated in the muscle
during the eccentric contraction and this causes the tendon to "tell itself that it NEEDS to grow, adapt and
get stronger", and it does with the specialist physiotherapy sessions.
Our highly trained Sports and Knee Physiotherapists will guide you
through this rehabilitation process, tailoring your treatment to both
your needs and your sport.
