Ice Massage for Back Pain Relief

Interestingly, in a world of highly advanced and sophisticated medical care, a simple ice massage can still be one of the more effective and proven method to provide pain relief to a sore lower back or sore neck.

It is effective used standalone or in combination with other treatments.

For patients who are experiencing back pain or neck pain, ice massage therapy is easy, quick and even free to do, and it can help provide much pain relief for many types of back pain, and is really effective for a sore back caused by muscle strain.

How Ice Massage Works to Relieve Pain

Ice massages can help provide relief for back pain by:

  • decreasing and slowing the inflammatory response and effects that happens after injuries. Most back pain come with some levels/types of inflammation, and decreasing the inflammation definitely reduces the pain experience
  • cold numbs painful/sore tissues, and this is pain relief that is similar to local anesthetic application
  • cold slows the nerve impulse in the location, and this interrupts the pain-spasm reaction between nerves
  • cold decreases tissue damage (hence, decrease pain)
  • massage amplifies the beneficial effects of cold INTO the soft tissues

Ok, here's the deal:

  1. Ice massage therapy is only most effective has a timeline

Most effective when it is applied as soon as possible after the injury happens, usually within the first couple of hours and the effectiveness drops after 24 to 48 hours later.

The cold makes the muscles and veins contract, decreasing painful spasms as well as contracting the veins, which in turn decreases circulation. Once you remove the cold, the veins over-compensate when it notices that the area is too cool and the vein dilates and oversupply blood that is rich with nutrients to repair the injured back muscles, ligaments and tendons to heal faster.

  2. Safe icing/cooling method

Please never apply ice or ice bags directly onto skin, as this can cause iceburn - always wrap your ice in a plastic bag AND then into towel wrap, then apply with massage applications onto the sore area.

Ice Massage for Sore Back Muscles

Often low back pains are caused by muscle strain. What happens is the larger paired muscles in the lower back (known as the erector spinae) that helps to hold up our spine, when injured, can be inflamed and spasm, causing a lot of low back pain and stiffness.

Common causes of back muscle strains includes:

  • sudden "jolt" movement
  • awkward movement
  • bad/awkward angle fall
  • lifting heavy objects using the back (instead of the legs)
  • accidents in sports or in vehicles

Though it may sound like a simple/humble injury, yet a muscle strain cause a tremendous amount of pain. Actually, this kinds of injuries is one the most common reasons people go to the accident and emergency (A&E) rooms - yes, it's very, very painful.

But nothing much will be done in the A&E, except to give you some muscle relaxants/pain relief medications and you need to rest up to 2-3 days, and apply ice massage.

You will also be referred for spine physiotherapy where we will assess, diagnose and prescribe specific therapies to accelerate soft tissue healing, increase movement, decrease pain and get you back to pain-free movement.
